Glass balustrades are a popular architectural feature for both modern and traditional spaces, offering a stylish way to ensure safety without compromising views or natural light. We offer a variety of framed and frameless glass systems to suit your design preferences and safety requirements. But before choosing between the two, it’s important to understand the key safety considerations involved.
Key Differences
Framed glass balustrades include a visible structure, often in aluminium or steel, that holds the glass panels securely in place. This traditional design offers added reassurance in high-traffic areas or homes with children and pets. Frameless glass, by contrast, uses thicker, toughened glass panels that are structurally supported without the need for a surrounding frame, offering uninterrupted views and a sleek, minimalist finish.
Load-Bearing Requirements
Safety begins with structural integrity. Whether you're securing a balcony, staircase, or terrace, your balustrade must withstand expected loads. Framed systems naturally distribute weight through the frame, making them a more practical choice for areas with frequent use than frameless glass: this style relies entirely on the strength of the glass and fixing method such as base channels or point fixings.
Glass Thickness
For frameless designs, glass thickness becomes more important to consider. At TSS Balustrade Centre, we follow British Standard BS 6180 guidelines, which recommend laminated, toughened glass ranging from 10mm to 21.5mm for most residential applications. Thicker panels may be necessary for installations without a handrail or those in exposed outdoor areas.
Framed systems, while using thinner glass in some cases, still require toughened safety glass to ensure durability and compliance with regulations. They are nonetheless normally still thinner than most panels used in a frameless glass balcony.
Compliance with UK Building Regulations
All glass balustrade systems must meet strict UK safety standards. This includes minimum height requirements and limitations on gaps between panels or railings. Our team ensures that every installation isn’t just stylish, but also fully compliant with BS 6180 guidelines among other relevant building codes.
Balancing Aesthetics with Practicality
Frameless glass offers a contemporary, airy feel that’s ideal for scenic locations or open-plan interiors. However, it may not be suitable for every environment. If additional support is needed or if young children are regularly present, a framed system might be a better choice. Our experts can help you strike the perfect balance between safety and style.
