A Guide To Balustrade Installations: Types And Processes

Balustrades have been used in homes and buildings for centuries, designed to offer safety while also providing beautiful interior design elements. You can find a range of balustrade options to suit any architectural style, and while balustrade installation is a relatively easy process once you find the right suppliers, pairing your property project with the correct type is crucial.

Whether you are looking for glass and aluminium balustrades or a Juliet balconies supplier, these additions will add style to any type of building. Interested in learning more about balustrade installation for your home or business premises? Or keen to discover the purpose of frameless systems, fire-rated balustrades and glass options? Keep on reading and let TSS Balustrade Centre provide you with that crucial guidance.

Unique Balustrade Options

Simply put, a balustrade is a row of small posts supported and joined together as a unit by a railing, therefore your everyday domestic balustrade is a safety barrier - but can be made to add to the beauty of a building thanks to the many designs available. Made up of a rail with supporting balusters, and similar to traditional bannisters (though more visually pleasing and complex in nature), various colours and constructions mean balustrades are compatible with most homes.

In 2024, there are many types of balustrade available for purchase, made from aluminium, steel and glass, with these unique designs often serving different purposes for different contexts - which we’ll take a look at below. Alternatively, our projects page should give you a satisfactory overview. In many instances, you will have legal considerations to contend with, and these assorted options have been created with that in mind:

Fire Rated Balustrades

All residential projects over 18 metres in height are banned from using laminated glass for balustrades, and this is quite the challenge for contractors and project developers, however, fire-rated balustrades are a great solution. Conforming to both BS6180:2011 and BS8579:2020 regulations, as well as satisfying further changes made in 2022, these balustrades are fire-safe as standard - as their name would suggest. A combination of sleek design work and a special laminated glass infill make them stand out, and these options are fully adjusted, working with an innovative glass construct that not only looks the part but functions excellently.

Frameless Systems

Frameless systems are often favoured for their unique appearance, though this isn’t all you can expect when having them installed by TSS Balustrade Centre. Strong and durable as well as easy to keep clean, a frameless balustrade won’t block light, and likely creates the illusion of space in your individual room. Once installed, expect easy maintenance and cleaning - as well as unmatched elegance and visual appeal from Mod 6000 and Mod 6400 varieties. These are generally intended for light use, such as private residences and light commercial applications.

Glass Options

Glass balustrade options are brilliant for bespoke installations and can be cut to size by us, relevant to your setting and precise needs. Contrary to some expectations, glass is an extremely durable construction material, continuing to maintain durability and quality over the years, making it ideal for balustrades within commercial and domestic settings. A glass balustrade installed in line with windows creates a modern interior benefitting from natural light - meanwhile, glass balustrades are brilliant for use in stadiums, and can withstand a significant horizontal load of up to 3 kN/m if necessary.

Regulations And Rules

When installing balustrades in the UK, it is essential to adhere to building regulations, and the best way to ensure a job is completed competently is to employ industry specialists. This helps to ensure the structures are safe and compliant with the law - as balustrades aren’t just installed to look good, they are also a crucial safety feature. At TSS Balustrade Centre, we understand that when completing any building work, it must be compliant with Building Regulations.

If planning to install balustrades by yourself and without professional assistance, you will need to submit a building notice or full plans application to the local building control body, which can be time-consuming, stressful and won’t always result in a positive outcome. This is why it is important to seek professional help when completing building works such as installing domestic or commercial balustrades. Generally, balustrades must reach a height of 900mm minimum for any location with a drop of more than 600mm, while the balustrade needs to be strong enough to resist any force applied to it. There also needs to be adequate spacing between balusters, ensuring that the gap is not too big.

How We Install

First and foremost, expect your balustrade supplier to take measurements for the balustrades themselves, determining the best method to do so, depending on your particular context. Fixing modular or glass balustrade systems can be difficult, so you’re almost always better to hire professional contractors when fitting. The type of balustrade and underlying surface will determine the installation method, therefore this is never a process to be rushed.
